A craft distillation revolution...

movement lies in an inconspicuous neighborhood of small warehouses

Fee: $10 for 6 spirits
Tours run daily at 3 PM. An
additional tour runs at 1 PM on Saturdays only. The cost of a tour is $20

Leading the charge is
House Spirits whose credo is: "Old World
Philosophy for the New World Palate." Whether pumping out its
pre-Prohibition style Aviation Gin or its small-batch Apothecary Line of
one-of-a-kind liquors, House Spirits is top-shelf central.
They got their
start in Corvallis, Oregon, in 2004, then moved to Portland in 2005.
American Aviation Gin kicked things off, soon followed by Korgstad Aquavit.
Other limited-edition small batch spirits soon joined alongside, including
whiskeys, rums, coffee liqueur and Oregon raki. Westward Oregon Straight
Malt Whiskey is an original malt whiskey inspired by the Irish tradition but
crafted in a unique and distinctly American style.

peppers, Mud Puddle Vodka infused with roasted chocolate nibs, Farmer's
Grappa, and several rums, gins and whiskeys.

After three years of waiting, a barrel of apple brandy
is finally ready... Brandies
and liqueurs from regional fruits are the specialty of Stone Barn
Brandyworks, which is located just over a mile south of the other members of
Distillery Row. The Northwest Cherry Brandy, Bartlett Pear Brandy, Quince
Liqueur or Biggs Junction Apricot Liqueur would make phenomenal gifts with a
local connection -- as would Stone Barn's various ryes, whiskeys, the
Eastside Ouzo and the Pinot Noir Grappa. And when fruit is not in season,
they keep making whiskey.

sugar. Crafting everything in-house from scratch ingredients, they strive
to offer inventive additions to the worlds of both tea and craft spirits.

Stills abound at Clear Creek.
Clear Creek Distillery, founded
in 1985, is one of the innovators in the Portland craft distillery scene.
The company's varied offerings are crafted from local fruits, including
grappa, eau de vie, liqueurs and well regarded brandies -- including pear
brandy, with a fully grown fruit inside each bottle. The New Your
Times Magazine said that many experts believe Clear Creek's brandies
to be among the best fruit brandies ever made in the U.S. Clear Creek also
crafts McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt Whiskey. Using Bartlett pears grown
hour away in Hood River, the Pear Brandy is made in the
tradition France's classic

Rogue Distillery & Public House
- 1339 Northwest Flanders Street
HOURS:(11am-12am Sun-Thurs and 11am-1am
Fri-Sat. Distillery tours are Mon-Fri at 5pm, or by special request.
Rogue added spirits to its
extensive beer offerings back in 2003. Now there's a dark rum, Dead Guy
Whiskey, hazelnut spice rum that brings Oregon's famous filberts to the
booze world, spruce gin that has a bit of a forestry flavor and a white
rum. The Rogue Public House serves Rogue spirits as well as 38 beers on
tap and wine.
McMenamins Distillery @ Edgefield -

Distillery Tours Monday–Friday at
2 p.m.; Saturday & Sunday at 2 p.m. & 4 p.m.
McMenamin's Edgefield Distillery opened in Troutdale, about 15 miles east of
Portland, in 1998, and the Cornelius Pass Roadhouse, located in Hillsboro,
just added spirit making to its location in 2012. Although McMenamin's is
best known for its funky and very cool rehabbed venues -- from chapels to
old schools -- they've consistently gotten nods for their beer brewing along
the way. Now the local chain
can add whiskeys, gins and brandies to the menu -- all made in house.

Highland Stillhouse -
201 S 2nd St., Oregon
11 am-midnight Tuesday-Saturday, 11 am-10 pm Sunday.
Its Oregon City locale keeps the iconic Highland
Stillhouse well off the radar of most Portland locals. Too bad. The
Stillhouse has, quite simply, the most extensive Scotch selection that you
are likely to experience anywhere, including most places in Scotland. We
recommend an early day weekend ride on the My Chauffeur* bus, as you
are not likely to imbibe lightly. Order some Scotch you've never heard of,
and while some blowhard at the other table explains that Scotch is all about
the water, you will be looking out at the fine waters of the Willamette from
the patio. The voluminous beer list has plenty of rare imports from the
British isles, but seriously: Stick to the Islay. There are 54 bottles of it
to try before you even make it to the Lowlands or the Speyside.
